NAIROBI—At least 50 people are now living with Coronavirus in Kenya after eight more people tested positive on Monday, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said.

Kagwe noted that unlike previously thought, the virus is now being transmitted among Kenyans who did not have recent history of travel to countries with the Covid-19.

“Nairobi still lead in the number of cases with local transmissions spiking across the country,” the CS noted.

He added that: “From the 2,050 people in mandatory quarantine, we have in the last 24 hours tested 172 samples, 84 samples have so far been analyzed and have received confirmation of 1 person who has tested positive for coronavirus.”

According to Kagwe, community transmission means the virus is no longer transported from outside the country, urging Kenyan to adhere to the strict hygiene protocols spelled out by the government as well social-distancing guidelines.

Among other interventions put in place is an advisory for Nairobians to cease travelling to upcountry during this period.

Employers have also been asked to release employees at 4 pm, to allow them to travel to their homes before the curfew time.

The CS further stated that tracing of contacts of the 50 patients is ongoing and the total number of close contacts now stands at 1474.
