Cholera outbreak claim 5 in Wajir, affects more than 90 others

WAJIR—A cholera outbreak in Wajir has claimed 5 lives since it was detected a week ago. speaking on Wajir Radio Community, governor Ahmed Abdullahi assured that the situation was under control.

“Following the confirmation of cholera cases in Wajir town, the department of public health has been carrying out a public sensitization campaign in the entire county,” he said.

According to the Public Health and Sanitation Secretary in Wajir County, Abdinur Haji Mohammed, five people have so far succumbed to the outbreak while 76 others have been treated and discharged. 16 are currently being treated at the county referral hospital.

Dr. Abdinur said he suspects the pandemic was brought to the town of Wajir by an infected person who came from one of the affected neigbouring counties. “The effected person passed through either Jogoo or Burwako areas of the town,” he said.

“The public health department has sent out a team of public health officers going round the villages following suspected cases, treating water sources and as well ensuring that proper hygiene measures have been put in place,” the governor stated.

An emergency quarantine ward has been set up at Wajir County Referral Hospital following the outbreak.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross Society has sent a medical team comprising of nursing officers, public health officers, laboratory technologists and water quality specialist. KRCS also provided
assorted medical commodities, IV Fluids, hand sanitizers, tents, chlorine and cholera
beds to support the local authority’s bid to contain the situation.
