The consignment is estimated at 2 tonnes and is worth more than sh 20 million at street value.Confirming the incident to Kulan Post, the County Police Commandant Stephen Nge’tich stated that the bhang was likely destined for Wajir although it was not immediately clear of it’s final destination.

“We nabbed Canabis Sativa with a street value of sh 20 million and the suspect will Ben arraigned,” Ngetich said at his office.
Bhang is usually smuggled into the country through the border with Moyale. It’s immediate source is believed to be from Moyale, Ethiopia.

It’s the first time such a large quantity of bhang was nabbed in Wajir, a county increasingly, but silently ravaged by drugs such as Khat, Mugoka and bhang.

The anti-drug activist have previously raised the red flag on the intake of those drugs by schoolgoing children and teens.  The stretch of road that links Wajir to Moyale such as Buna and Bute as well Township areas of Wajir town are mostly affected by the bhang.

Locals hailed the security forces for apprehending and nabbing the consignment at a time when NACADA, the anti drugs state agency seeks to start campaign to sensitive the communities on the effects of drugs abuse.

Locals also commended the Kenya Defense Forces for delivering the illegal drugs to the police station.  Abdisirat Mohamud, a father of five teen boys said the sight of the consignment was a sight to behold, adding that the same would not have been possible if the police were the first to contact the smugglers.

“I believe this was part of an ongoing illicit trade…was long ongoing only that this time it was the KDF that nabbed it,” he said
The three men suspects transporting the load are now in custody awaiting trial at Wajir Magistrate Courts.
