MANDERA—An orphanage in Mandera received Eid presents from a locally based orgernisation, a week before the  Muslim holiday is marked.

The orgernisation—Sisters of the Horn (SOTH)—has been conducting  projects at Mandera Islamic Centre located in Mandera County. The facility gives shelter to orphans between 4 to 17 years. SOTH has already carried out three main projects at the home this year such as sanitation project and provision of school equipment and stationeries.

The orgernisation also embarked on procuring sports kits for the boys including footballs, volleyballs and a volleyball net to allow the boys enjoy their free time practicing and taking up new sports and activities.

“This is part of providing an environment that is conducive to the children welfare in the center,” Suheila Adan, the chairlady said.

The organisation similarly identified lack of access to sanitation within the orphanage and repairing of the latrine which collapsed due to inefficient drainage system

“This had left the kids uncomfortable and devastated, some had to walk further to access the other pit latrines,” SOTH’ secretary stated.

The organisation has similarly identified the lack of access to sanitation within the orphanage.

In February, SOTH began the construction of four pit latrines—two for the girls and 2 for the boys at a value of sh274,490.

The project was completed on the 20th of May, 2019 with the support of the MIC team acting as their local counterpart to ensured the development of the project went smooth.

The pit latrines were officially opened on the 13th of July this year when the “Sisters” decided to come and grace in the home. SOTH said they received help from Ummu Kassim, an MCA in Mandera County.

Over the weekend the Chairperson of Sisters of SOTH Suhaila Adan along with the Secretary, Hafsa Hayat Abdullahi and two members: Asha Samantar and Firdous Omar distributed stationery and sports kits and spent the day with the students where they volunteered to cook meals for the children.

Sisters of the Horn is a community based orgernisation started by seven young women in a bid to create space for the young people to chart their own future and help the less fortunate in the society particularly the children.
