A Chemistry teacher in Wajir wrote KCSE answers on the blackboard, Education CS says

NAIROBI—A Wajir Chemistry teacher wrote the answers to the exam paper on the blackboard, the education cabinet secretary said on Friday during update on the ongoing national exams.

Speaking at St. George’s Girls secondary in Nairobi on Friday, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said bid to curb cheating in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in high gear.

He stated that he was personally impressed by the aggressive and bold step taken by the local administrators and schools managements to counter cheating at their area of center.

Without mentioning the name of the school at which the Chemistry teacher shared candidates with the answer on the blackboard, Magoha said the teacher will be punished for the move. Leaders previously said such blanket condemnation was used as scapegoat to serve punishment for all schools in a county.

“This is mischief of the highest order and we will deal with him,” the CS said.

Mogoha, who is overseeing the national exams for the first time revealed that at least 50 phones used in cheating have been confiscated across the country.

In Nairobi, a student doing the exams as private candidate was caught with a phone held between his legs by a local chief. Mogoha said he will recommend the chief’s promotion.

“It took an intervention of a Muslim chief who discovered phones between the legs of students in a Nairobi centre,” he said.

Out of these phones, 35 have  been  recovered at an examination centre in Nairobi.

The CS said so far DCI detectives have managed to positively identify the owners of 24 out of the 35 phones.

Mogoha added that investigations have been launched to establish the owners of the remaining phones.
