Somalia—Al Shabaab has denied claims by Ethiopia that 70 of its fighters were killed in an airstrikes in Somalia.

In an official report by the militia group, they accused the Ethiopian government of “copying Kenya’s playbook of claiming responsibility for incidents that didn’t happen”.

Brigadier General Yilma Merdassa, Chief of Ethiopian Air Force, said the airstrike was carried out to foil plans of the militant group to attack Ethiopian contingent of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

He said “we achieved 100 percent of our plans.” Merdassa noted that the september 15th attack was conducted after an extensive study and plans.

He reported that about 70 Al Shabaab militants were killed and two vehicles packed with weapons were destroyed in the air strike.

However, the brigadier did not disclose the time and specific location of the air raid. Ethiopia is one of the troop contributing countries to AMISOM.

Other countries contributing troops to the AU Mission are Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya and Uganda.

The U.S. military has also carried out several airstrikes against the Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab in the Horn of Africa nation since President Donald Trump approved expanded military operations against the group in 2017.

The U.S.this year only has carried out 20 airstrikes against the Al Shabaab. The U.S. has about 500 troops in Somalia including Special Operations Forces working as military advisers and conventional logistics personnel.
