SOMALIA—A new division has emerged between Al-Shabaab leadership after a prolong illness of their leader Ahmed Diriye Abu Ubayda that hinder him to perform his duties.
A faction of Al-Shabaab elected Sheikh Hussein Ali Fidoow as their new leader while another team led by the group Spokesman Ali Rage and Mahat Mohamed Karate opposed the election of the new leader.
On Thursday suspected Al-Shabaab militants invaded Komor Haile mosque at the Kenya-Somalia border and preached to the residents for about five hours.
“They arrived when a sheikh was delivering a sermon, snatched the microphone and ordered him to sit and listen. We were shocked,” said a local resident who sort anonymity.
According to a Mandera police report, an unknown number of heavily armed militants arrived at the mosque on Thursday at about 10pm and left at around 2am.
“About ten heavily armed al-Shabab militants entered a mosque in Fafi centre and asked for the whereabouts of area chief (local government administrator), positions of security personnel and Kenya Police Reservists (KPR) men. One of the KPR men escaped to the bush. They left later after the five hour incident,” said a senior police officer who declined to be named.
Komor Haile is located between Koromey and Arabia in Mandera East Sub County.It is not clear if the militants arrived on foot or used vehicles.
This is the second time the militants have preached their tirade verses , the first one being August 2015 at Hareri where they raided a mosque and preached against the Kenya government and security forces.
