Al Shabab burn school, abduct two teachers in Fafi, Garissa County

The militants who were armed with small arms and explosives, damaged a mobile communication post in the area.

Media reports say the police response was not quick owing to fear of landmines that the group plant along the road.

North Eastern regional commissioner Mohamed Saleh said they had sent a team of police officers to the area to access the extent of damage caused.

“We understand there are criminals who destroyed a communication mast at Fafi Centre hence affecting various activities there. We are pursuing them,” he told the Standard.

The attacks came hours after nine security officers and a civilian died on Wednesday when their vehicles ran over explosive devices in separate terror incidents in Lamu County.

The Regional Commissioner for North Eastern Kenya, Mohamud Salah while confirming the incident, said the group asked for the direction to the house of the local chief and the new mosque being constructed at the village. It was later confirmed that some of the construction workers at the mosque were non-locals who the security authorities believe were their targets.

Mr Salah said he believes the attackers asked for the direction of the mosque to harm the non-local construction worker at the site.

“There were seven non-local construction workers at the mosque and their (attackers) aim was to possibly to harm them”, he said.

“The workers managed to escape into the nearby bushes after the attackers started shooting indiscriminately as they approached,” Salah added.
