MOGADISHU—The armed group Al Shabab have reportedly executed same-sex couple in Somalia involving two men from Central region.
The men were publicly executed “after months of investigation and weeks of trial.”
The event was attended by hundreds of eyewitness who applauded the armed group for the show of ”strictness on the way of Islam.”
Its not the first time Al Shabab executed people they accused of defying the tenets of Islam in public. In early 2015, the grouped a man for allegedly insulting prophet Muhammad.
Al Shababa, under the areas they have jurisdiction over, exercise Shariah Law which spells harsh punishment for people found guilty of the act.
Sexual orientation is a taboo topic in Somalia and gay persons are stigmatised. Gay people cannot be open about their sexuality in Somalia without facing violence, threats to their life and even execution.
