MANDERA—At least 29 people died of attacks staged by the Somalia based militant group Al Shabab since March this year.

Among the casualties are five police officers killed on the 20th June after they are hit by rocket-propelled grenade believed to have been launched by the group.

In a statement later in the day, the police said their Landcruiser was ambushed near El Wak in Mandera County killing five of the nine officers who were escorting a passenger bus from Wajir to Mandera.

Three months earlier, the police discovered two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at border point three, the area where the Kenyan border meets Somalia and Ethiopian border.

On the 1st of July, at least six passengers were killed after the bus they were traveling in was attacked by the militants near El Wak. A police reservist also died in the morning attack.

On the 6th of October,  six people died and 27 others injured at Bula Works in Mandera town after the militant group stormed a building that housed non-local Kenyans.

The attackers planted landmines in the building to harm the police and delay rescue effort.

On Tuesday, a group of militants used explosives to get their way into a guest house—Bishaaro Guest House. At least 12 people were killed in the attack.

In the last two attacks, the security apparatus in the town were aware of the impending attacks, according to the government spokesman Erik Kiraithe while speaking after the first attack on the 7th of October.

In Tuesday’s attack, the survivors said they tipped the area police boss over their fears, but he assured them that everything would be alright.
