NAIROBI—Human right activist Boniface Mwangi has  alleged  that Garissa governor Ali Bunow who is being accused of attempted murder masterminded the shooting of former Garissa county CEC of Finance in Kileleshwa.

The assassin who was used to shoot Mukhtar, one David Mwai allegedly committed suicide at Parklands Police Station, where he was being held as the investigation into the August 19 shooting went on.

“All evidence points to @HonAliKorane as the mastermind who hired a gunman. The assassin, David Mwai was paid Sh1.8 Million and was supposed to get a plea bargain and become a state witness and the @PoliceKE were paid to kill David while he was in lawful custody,” Boniface tweeted.

According to police, Mwai used clothes to hang himself. A police officer who was at the report desk said he heard noises from the cells and assumed the suspects were singing.

Some officers at the station were however not convinced that the prime suspect had committed suicide.

“He might as well have been killed. We will see more drama in this case,” one of them said.

It emerged that there was a plot to eliminate Mukhtar and a city-based lawyer on suspicion they planned to challenge Korane’s academic qualifications.

Mukhtar recorded a statement with the police about his imminent death, implicating governor Korane.

Yesterday, police said they had recovered Sh400,000 from suspects in Mukhtar’s shooting.

The money was part of Sh2.4 million allegedly paid by the person who was plotting to kill Mukhtar and his lawyer, Charles Kanjama.

The Nairobi based lawyer Charles Kanjama has also recorded a statement with the police but declined to divulge the contents of the same.

Mukhtar is still at Nairobi Hospital in critical condition. He had been awarded Sh50 million compensation by a Nairobi court after he was sacked from his position as Finance executive.
