KISMAYU—Fresh details are emerging over Saturday’s morning suicide attack at Kismayu University where the Somali National Army turned into a military training facility in the port city of Kismayu where at least 10 people have been confirmed killed.

A vehicle stuffed with explosives materials was rammed into the front gate of the highly guarded facility. It also emerged that the driver of the vehicle was a familiar figure in the camp. The man, whose name has not been proclaimed by the authorities, set-off the explosives when he arrived inside the camp where the recruits had erected tents.

A Kenyan soldier listed in the African union force, AMISOM, was among the dead while over 30 other Somalia army soldiers sustained injuries in the morning attack.

“Three of our soldiers who were training the recruits were injured in the suicide attack,” a statement by the AMISOM said.

Independent reports put the death toll far more than the official figure as the attack happened while the soldiers were inside their tents.

The Somali based militant group Al Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack as African Union force said in a tweet that they are holding suspected Shabab members and being interrogated by security officials.
