The Awlyahan community in Lagdera has officially endorsed the gubernatorial bid of Ambassador Mohamed Shidiye ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The endorsement marks a significant political boost for the former Lagdera MP as he seeks to make a comeback in county leadership.
The declaration was made during a well-attended meeting held in Modogashe town, where elders, professionals, youth, and women leaders from the Awlyahan clan gathered to express their support.
The event in Modogashe was both political and also symbolic, reflecting the community’s desire to be actively involved in shaping the leadership of Garissa County.
Cultural performances, prayers, and speeches from opinion leaders marked the occasion, underscoring the unity of purpose within the Awlyahan community.
Speaking during the event, the community leaders cited Shidiye’s experience in public service, diplomatic engagements, and development track record as key reasons behind their endorsement.
“We believe Amb. Shidiye has the leadership qualities, vision, and experience to steer Garissa County in the right direction. His previous service in parliament and as an ambassador has prepared him for this critical role,” said elder Abdi Noor.
Ambassador Shidiye served as Kenya’s ambassador to Botswana and held senior positions in government.
He expressed his gratitude for the endorsement and promised to prioritize inclusive development, youth empowerment, and improved service delivery if elected.
“This endorsement is both humbling and encouraging. I stand committed to serving all communities in Garissa with integrity, equity, and transparency,” said Shidiye.
The endorsement by the Awlyahan, a sub-clan within the broader Ogaden community, is expected to shift political dynamics in Lagdera and Dadaab, as well as the wider Garissa County, as various aspirants begin to marshal support across clan and constituency lines.
Several youth representatives who spoke during the forum expressed optimism that Amb. Shidiye’s candidacy would prioritize long-neglected areas like Modogashe, which they said has faced years of infrastructural and economic marginalization.
“For too long, our voices have been ignored. We believe Shidiye understands the issues affecting border communities and will be a strong voice for us at the county level,” said Fartun Shekkh Hassan, a local youth leader.
Women leaders from the area also threw their weight behind Shidiye, highlighting his past support for education and maternal health programs.
“Ambassador Shidiye has always been approachable and responsive to the concerns of women. His record speaks for itself,” said Hawa Abdikadir, a teacher and community mobilizer.
Political analysts say the endorsement signals a possible realignment within the Ogaden voting bloc, which has traditionally played a key role in determining county leadership.
The move may influence other sub-clans to forge an alliance with their preferred candidates ahead of what is expected to be a hotly contested race.
