NAIROBI—The Senate has impeached Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud following a grueling trial that lasted nearly three hours.

25 senators voted in favour of the governor’s removal, two shot it down while four others decided to abstain.

Earlier while defending against the fifteen charges of impeachment the Senate select committee probed, only two were found to hold waters.

“I believe that the whole process is based on a witchhunt,” governor Mohamed Abdi said at the Senate floor.

His lawyer similarly urgued along the same line, saying the motion of removal by the Wajir Members of the County Assembly “influence by people with ulterior motives.”

Senators were divided on what to make of the committee conclusion. Elegeyo-Marakwet took issue with the role of the MCAs in enforcing their legislative duties, saying they failed to press all available buttons before reaching the decision to impeach the governor.

“Has the health committee summoned the CEC of Health to respond to the allegations at his department or any other senior official in the Health department?” said Murkomen.

The former Senate Majority Leader also took issue with the claim that then First Lady of the county was “managing the county,” saying it was not “a strong argument to base the removal of a governor.”
