MANDERA—Security apparatus are on high alert in Mandera County and will punish clan militiamen, Governor Ali Roba has said.
While addressing the County dialogue forum in Mandera town, the governor said security and peace are paramount to prosperity and development.
“We cannot lie to ourselves that there will be meaningful development if we continue fighting along tribal lines for the small resources we have,” Roba said
More than six people were confirmed dead as two others were nursing serious injuries following an attack by militiamen in Banisa, Mandera County on Wednesday.
Mathias Chisambo, the Banisa Deputy County Commissioner confirmed the incident and noted that the militiamen were from the Garre clan and attacked the village killing five people from the Degodia clan.
The Mandera County governor said tribal conflict had torn the County apart before the advent of devolution in 2013. He accused some political leaders of fueling tribal conflicts in the region.
“My government has laid bare opportunities for tapping by development-conscious residents, and it loses meaning if some leaders continue fuelling tribal animosity and hatred for selfish gains.” Roba said
In 2013, Garre and Degodia clans agreed to cease attacks and remain peaceful after constant and a long period of clashes among the two rival clans.
The governor listed several development success stories during his first tenure in office. He said it was time the region shunned negative ethnicity to realize the fruits of devolution.
“We have done over 1,000 kilometers of tarmac and murram roads, built over 50 new health facilities and over 200 Early Childhood Development classrooms, and it has been made possible by enhanced peace and security by our security agents,” Roba noted.
