Kulan PostMOGADISHU—The blue and white of the Somalia flag seemed to be the color of choice for many celebrating the country’s 58th birthday on Sunday afternoon in downtown Mogadishu.
Somali Independence Day celebrates the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland and the State of Somaliland into the Somali Republic on July 1, 1960.
Several world leaders Sunday congratulated Somalia as it marked its 58 years of independence.
US President Donald Trump sent a message, stating: “On behalf of the United States of America, I wish you and the people of Somalia a joyous 58th anniversary of independence.”
“The United States looks forward to continuing its partnership with the people and government of Somalia to work toward a brighter future,” he added.
This year’s theme was Diversity and Inclusion.
Speaking at the ceremony in Mogadishu, President Farmajo congratulated the Somali people on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the independence of the Northern regions.
“Our freedom which we are enjoying today was gained through blood and wealth, today is a victory that began in the 1960s when the north and south joined and become united, that victory was one of the nation’s leading causes of Somalism and unity,” said President Farmajo.
Somali National Army (SNA), local authorities, civil society members, ministers, and lawmakers on Sunday night gathered at Lama-galay Military Base in Beledweyne town to mark 58 anniversary of the Independence.
While traditional cultural events and parades take place in Somalia, celebrations aren’t limited to Somalia. Many events were held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States to help bring some sense of unity to those dispersed by civil war. Historical presentations, cooking demonstrations, and cultural events were all held to unify and teach others about Somalia.
