The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) want Wajir Governor put behind bars over loss of sh 26 million, court papers indicate.

DPP Nurdin Haji wanted Governor Mohamed Abdi arrested for failing to respond to court summons by the Anti-Corruption court in a bid to give his defense on how two county officials and a bank manager swindled sh 26 million imprest in 2018.

“The previous summons were not properly served,” trial magistrate at the Anti-Corruption court, Teresia Murugi said in a directive where she declined a prayer by the prosecution seeking an order allowing the detectives to arrest the governor.

Justice Teresia added that the court has “not seen affidavit indicating that the summons were properly served to him (Governor Abdi).”

“The Law is very clear on the prove of service,” she noted. The judge issued fresh summons to the governor and challenged the prosecution to furnish the court with further evidence.

Haji want Governor Abdi to step aside to allow investigations to commence as did happen to Nairobi, Kiambu and Laikipia Counties.

EACC have last year arrested two officials accused of colluding with bank officials to illegally withdrew county funds.

“Investigations by EACC established that Wajir County Government officials in cahoots with KCB Bank officials irregularly withdrew and embezzled Kshs 26.1M held at the County Government Imprest Account,” a statement from EACC reads.

Governor Mohamed is facing an array of corruption cases as Auditor-General report said over sh 317 million remain missing from record.
