The Afgaab Council of Elders from the larger Awlyahan clan has officially received and endorsed Dr. Abdihakim Abdullah Dere, PHD to contest the Garissa gubernatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 general election on Tuesday.
Led by Ugaas Ibrahim Dubow, the council convened to formally accept the application from Mr. Dere, who is seeking to become the next governor of Garissa County.
The endorsement marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first individual from the Afgab sub-clan to express interest in the county’s top leadership position.
Speaking during the gathering, Mr. Nur Ibrahim, a professional and respected member of the Afgab Council of Elders, emphasized the historic nature of the application.
“This is the first time someone from our clan has formally sought to run for governor. It is a bold and commendable move. We will consider his application with the seriousness it deserves,” he said.
The endorsement signals growing interest and political realignment within the Awlyahan community as they position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Observers see the move as a strategic attempt by the Afgaab leadership to increase their political representation and influence within the broader Garissa County governance structure.
Dr. Abdihakim Abdullah Dere, PHD, known for his community engagement and development background, is expected to begin grassroots mobilization and consultations across the county in the coming months.
The Afgaab Council of Elders is expected to continue deliberations and may engage other sub-clans and political actors before issuing a final directive ahead of the 2027 campaigns.
