GARISSA—Garissa Township legislator Aden Barre Duale caught on secret tape making crude, politically aggressive comment about his rivals in the county.

In the video, he could be seen warning the media from coverage as he traversed the town a fortnight ago.

When a journalist from a local radio station put his voice recorder closer, Duale warned: “Young man, put your mic away I don’t want media around.”

Referring to his rivals—Garissa governor Nathif Jama and former deputy speaker Farah Maalim—Duale said he would “shave for them if they would not back off”.

“Let not the governor intimidate you with his position,’’ Duale started with the address at Dakaburi.

“Aden Barre (Duale) is behind you and is third in power.”

“Anyone who is untamed will be shaved for; they will burn their fingers,” he warned.

He also referred to his political rivals in the county as the “enemies that we have get rid of”.

“Let us unite and liberate Garissa,” he urged.

That statement has created tension in Garissa County and the Owlihan clan elders—the clan that Garissa Township hopeful Farah Maalim and Governor Nathif Jama belong to—now want the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to summon for Duale over the inflammatory comment.

They said s making such statements ahead of the polls could cause election-related clan violence if not filtered.

“In the Somali language, declaring to publicly shave for someone could as well mean killing that person,” an elder said during a conference in Garissa while reacting to the statement.

“We think Kaparo {the chairman of the NCIC) heard that and we expect him to act,” the elders said.
