NAIROBI—Garissa Township legislator, Aden Duale will not seek re-election to serve as a member of parliament if the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) won’t be implemented before the 2022 General Elections.

Instead, the Majority Leader of the National Assembly will work to realise Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential ambition and enjoy, he says, what life brings him forth.

“I will seek re-election (as MP) if the BBI is implemented, but if it fails I will not run for MP and will put all my effort in making sure DP Ruto becomes the president,” Duale said during an interview with the Citizen TV.

“I will be among the Wazees (elders) who take tea at the State House during their free time since I have accomplished my last political rite,” he added.

Duale joined politics in 2007 as Dujis MP. He then vied for the then newly established Garissa Township Constituency. He served the area as its representative to the National Assembly for two terms since 2013.

Duale defended his preference for parliamentary system of government saying the arrangement will allow communities considered as minorities to lead the country.

“I want a Borana, a Kisii…or even a Somali to become the Prime Minister of this country,” he noted.

In the BBI proposals, the Prime Minister will be nominated by the President and must be an MP since the PM will serve as Leader of Government Business in the National Assembly.

On the President’s tasking, the Prime Minister will chair Cabinet sub-committees.

“President will appoint an MP from the largest party or coalition in Parliament as Prime Minister who will take up the position after being approved by Parliament,” the report says.

The proposals adds that the Prime Minister shall have supervision and execution of the day-to-day functions and affairs of the Government.

The report similarly proposes that Kenyans continue to elect their President who remains the Head of State and Government. The report also says that the Deputy President should remain the principal assistant to the President and will be the running mate.
