ANKARA—Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has arrived in Ankara to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Turkish President.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had won tightly contested presidential polls which took place last Month.

“The president is here to witness the new dawn for our brothers in Turkey that followed the results of the recent presidential election. We hope that the longstanding Somali-Turkish relationship will continue to be strengthened,” said Abdinoor Mohamed, Somali presidential information director

President Farmajo was among several world leaders supportive of Erdogan who congratulated him on his victory in last Month’s elections.

The plane carrying the President and entourage touched down at Ankara International Airport on Sunday evening.

The president and his delegates were welcomed at the airport by officials from the Turkish government.

Turkish media have confirmed that the Presidents of Bulgaria, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Sudan, Guinea, Zambia, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Somalia, Mauritania, Gabon, Chad, Djibouti, Venezuela, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as well as Emir of Qatar, have confirmed that they will attend.

A total of 28 foreign dignitaries – including prime ministers, vice presidents, cabinet ministers and parliamentary speakers – are also expected to attend the ceremony.

Turkish president has for the last two years ruled under a state of emergency imposed in the wake of the 2016 failed coup, with tens of thousands arrested in an unprecedented crackdown which cranked up tensions with the Western countries.

Turkey is a major supporter of Somalia and continues to build key infrastructure across the Horn of Africa state.

Every year, hundreds of Somalis receive scholarships from Ankara to study in Turkish universities.

In Somalia, President Erdogan is regarded a hero.
