Nurses in some parts of the country have reportedly down their tools in response to what they said was a deliberate attempt by the government to frustrate the implementation of an agreement they signed with the government.

“The government promised to sign the aggrement in December last year but they have reversed on the promise,” said Mr Bulunya.

The Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) had directed all its 45,000 members to strike starting Monday morning until the CBA is signed and implemented.

In Mombasa, the strike took off at noon after a series of meetings called by union officials in the morning.

Services were hindered in Kakamega and Vihiga counties as the health workers boycotted work.

Doctors were forced to work with pharmacists as they struggled to attend to patients in Kakamega county.

The strking nurses forced out student nurses who were attached to Kakamega General Hospital in a bid for to cause mass boycott.

Mr Maloba said the government had failed to register the CBA in court and implement it.

Both Kakamega Knun Branch Chairman Benson Bulunya and his Vihiga counterpart Caleb Maloba seperately announced the kickof of the strike.

Some of the patients were not aware of the strike Monday morning and were caught unawares.

Operations at Nyeri Referral Hospital were not interrupted even as Knun officials insisted the strike was on.

In Garissa referral hospital, the strike notice was not implemented.
