MANDERA—Five children confirmed dead on the spot in Banisa, Mandera county following an explosion of a grenade.
Mathias Chisambo, Banisa Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner confirming the incident said the school children were playing with the grenade which they found in a grazing field.
“The children picked the device on Wednesday evening and were playing with it till on Thursday when it exploded,” Mr Chisambo told Kulan Post.
The Deputy County Commissioner suspected that the grenade might have been left behind by former British soldiers.
Bashir Ibrahim Alio, the Kiliweheri MCA echoed the same sentiments.
“It is regrettable that the British colonialist left behind this kind of object that has claimed innocent lives and leaving others either disabled or with permanent marks,” the MCA noted.
He added that the community will move to court to sue the British government and demand compensation as this is not the first time a stray grenade has claimed lives.
The children were aged between 12 and 16 years.
The children will be buried on Friday in line with the Islamic law.
