NAIROBI—Five people have died in a road accident along Nairobi–Garissa Highway in Machakos.

Machakos county police boss Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the five were among occupants of a bus and matatu that got involved in a head-on collision at Kitui junction in the Kanyonyo area within Yatta subcounty on Sunday.

Napeiyan said the incident happened at around 9.20 pm.

He said the bus was headed to Mandera from Nairobi while the 14-seater matatu was moving in the opposite direction.

“A Mandera bound bus under Kuku sacco headed to Mandera at 1920 hours has been involved in a fatal road traffic accident with a 14 seater matatu belonging to KINA sacco that was moving from Kitui,” Napeiyan told the Star on phone.

“The incident happened at Kitui junction, the prone Kanyonyo Sand/charcoal county barrier spot. Five people have died.”

Napeiyan said traffic officers from Matuu police station had responded and were at the scene managing traffic and clearing the scene.

He said traffic and flow had partially been interrupted.
