The Imam of Jamia Mosque earlier at Isha time when he declared tomorrow as Eid

NAIROBI—Muslim leaders and mosque Imams are declaring Tuesday as the start of Shawal as the Chief Khadi maintains that Kenyan Muslims will mark the celebration on Wednesday.

Shortly after the Isha prayers, the Imam of Jamia mosque, Sheikh Mohamed Swaleh told the congregation that Muslims will mark start of Shawal on Tuesday.

The Chief Khadi, Ahmed Muhdhar said country will mark beginning of Eid on Wednesday, stating that the “moon was not sighted in Kenya.

More and more counties are reporting the sightof the crescent moon. In Wajir, it was sighted in several areas in Wajir South.

In Garissa, it was sighted in Korakora in the outskirts of Garissa town. It was also sighted in several area in Mandera County.

Kenyans have taken to social media to denounce the Chief Khadi, saying he was not in touch with the reality.

Senior Counsel Ahmednassir Abdullahi was the first to ridicule the Khadi. 

“With all the clouds and rain and foggy weather this man has been looking for the moon in his bedroom!!!” He tweeted at the news that the Khadi was opposed to the Tuesday celebrations.

Saudi officials were the first to declare the sight of the crescent.
