GARISSA – The Kenya Red Cross Garissa Branch, in collaboration with the Garissa County Department of Health Services and the Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority, will hold a blood donation drive on Wednesday.
The Blood collection campaign will take place at Garissa Teaching and Referral Hospital and aims to collect life-saving Blood transfusion to support hospitals in the county.
The initiative aims to boost hospitals across the country with critical shortages of blood, affecting patients in need of urgent transfusions.
Medical experts said demand for blood is required particularly for accident victims, mothers experiencing childbirth complications, and patients with chronic illnesses such as sickle cell anemia.
Kenya Red Cross North Eastern Region Coordinator, Abdinoor Ole urged residents of Garissa to take part in the exercise, emphasizing the importance of blood donation in saving lives.
He said the need for blood is constant, and donations ensure that hospitals can adequately respond to emergencies.
“Let’s all donate blood to save lives. A single donation can be the difference between life and death for someone in need. We urge residents of Garissa to turn up in large numbers and support this noble cause,” said Mr. Ole.
Mrs. Umulkheir Mahat, a health advocate, stressed the significant impact of each blood donation.
She noted how a single pint of blood can save multiple lives, especially in cases where patients require repeated transfusions.
“One pint, multiple lives: Your blood donation matters. Many patients, including accident victims and those undergoing surgery, depend on donated blood to survive. By donating, you are directly contributing to saving lives,” said Mrs. Umulkheir.
Kenya has been struggling with inadequate blood supplies in hospitals.
According to the Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority, the country needs at least 500,000 units of blood annually to meet medical demands, but current collection rates fall significantly short of this target. The shortfall has placed pressure on hospitals, forcing them to rely on emergency appeals whenever there is an urgent need for blood.
The Kenya Red Cross has been instrumental in organizing blood donation drives across the country, playing a vital role in ensuring that hospitals are well-equipped to handle medical emergencies. Over the years, the organization has mobilized donors and raised awareness about the importance of maintaining a steady blood supply.
Donors have been advised to prepare by staying hydrated, eating a balanced meal before donating, and getting adequate rest after the procedure.
Medical professionals will be on-site to guide donors through the process and ensure their well-being.
Residents are encouraged to spread the word and participate in the drive, as their contributions will go a long way in saving lives and strengthening the health care system in Garissa County.
