Garissa University students received essential crisis response training on Tuesday in a seminar organized by the Institute of Peace and Security Studies (IPSS).

The one-day event, conducted by the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) at the LT Hall, aimed to equip students with critical skills for handling emergencies effectively.

The training covered vital topics such as fire prevention, active shooter protocols, evacuations, and overall emergency preparedness.

Through interactive sessions, students learned practical approaches to mitigating risks and responding efficiently to crises.

The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) is continuing its knowledge management training, focusing on drought risk management.

The program involves the development, organization, and dissemination of crucial information to aid decision-making and strengthen the capacity of stakeholders to address drought risks effectively.

NDMA facilitates knowledge-sharing initiatives among various stakeholders to encourage learning and innovation in drought response strategies.

The organization actively collaborates with research institutions, universities, and other partners to conduct in-depth studies on drought risk management.

Key research areas include the impacts of climate change on drought frequency and severity, livelihood strategies in arid and semi-arid lands, and the effectiveness of drought mitigation interventions.

Findings from these studies contribute to shaping policies and best practices for enhancing resilience against drought-related challenges.

The Institute of Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) of Garissa University aspires to meet industry and societal needs through the processing and dissemination of transformative knowledge, talent development, research, outreach, and entrepreneurship for sustainable development.

The seminar and ongoing training initiatives aim to foster a culture of preparedness and proactive crisis management.

This will ensure that students and stakeholders are well-equipped to contribute to sustainable development and disaster resilience in their communities.
