GARISSA – Garissa University will host the 11th Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Games on Saturday and Sunday.
The competition brings together top university teams from across the country in a battle of sportsmanship and unity.
All the visiting teams are the reigning champions at their respective regional levels.
In a statement shared with Kulan Post, the university extended a warm welcome to five participating universities. “We are excited to host this event and showcase the diversity of Kenya’s academic and sporting talent,” the statement read.
The KUSF Games are a premier inter-university sports competition in Kenya. They feature a variety of sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, and more.
Mr. Abdullahi Omar said hosting the battle for victory will enhance the visibility of Garissa university. He said the playoff will foster community engagement, and promote student development.
Mr. Omar said the event provides an opportunity to showcase the university’s facilities, attract potential partnerships, and boost local economic activities.
“The event also inspires students, encourages sports participation, and strengthens the university’s reputation as a center for holistic education,’ said Abdullahi.
Residents of Hodhan Hills in Waberi Ward, where Garissa University is located, have expressed their excitement about the contest. Many see it as an opportunity to promote the area and foster community engagement.
Amina Mohamed, a shop owner, welcomed the games, saying, “This is a big moment for our community. We’ve never had such a large event here before. It will bring business opportunities and put our only University on the map.”
Ali Noor, a youth working as barber in the ward, echoed similar sentiments. “This event will inspire the youth in our community. Seeing university students compete at this level will motivate many young people to pursue both sports and education,” he said.
Fatuma Abdirahman, a resident and parent, expressed pride in the university’s role in hosting the games.
“Garissa University has brought so much growth to our area. Hosting the national games shows the university’s progress and its contribution to our community,” she said.
Abdiaziz Oloow praised the qualifying teams and expressed optimism about the event. “We look forward to an exciting and competitive weekend. It is a great chance to celebrate sportsmanship and teamwork,” he said.
The university has made significant preparations to ensure the success of the event. It has upgraded its sports facilities and worked closely with KUSF officials to meet all requirements. The games are expected to attract hundreds of participants and fans, providing a boost to the local economy.
