TOWNSHIP – Garissa youth have thrown their support behind Mr. Mohamed Moulid Shurie in his bid for the county’s gubernatorial seat in the 2027 elections.
Mr. Shurie, the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Water Resources Authority (WRA) of Kenya, is a seasoned hydrogeologist with over 32 years of experience in water resource management.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science in Geology, and an Executive Master of Business Administration.
Garissa Youth Chairperson Mr. Nasteh Farah Buraze, said young people believe that Mr. Shurie’s vast expertise will be instrumental in addressing the county’s persistent water challenges.
Garissa, a semi-arid region, has long struggled with water scarcity. Mr. Buraze emphasized that under Mr. Shurie’s leadership, the county can expect significant investments in boreholes, water reservoirs, and irrigation systems.
“The youth of Garissa support MM Shurie because we believe he is best positioned to enhance water supply networks in both urban and rural areas,” said Mr. Buraze.
“His election would also improve sanitation services and waste management, reducing waterborne diseases.”
As the head of WRA, Mr. Shurie has championed national efforts to safeguard access to clean water through proper regulation.
He has been commended for ensuring long-term sustainability and quality of water resources across the country.
Mr. Buraze highlighted the need for reforms in the county’s education system.
He expressed confidence that Mr. Shurie would prioritize the expansion and improvement of Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centers.
“Investing in vocational training to equip youth with practical skills for employment is one of his top priorities,” said Mr. Buraze.
He told Kulan Post about that youth in the county engaged Mr. Shurie in Garissa last week during President William Ruto’s recent visit to the North Eastern region.
President William Ruto embarked on four-day extensive development tour of the North Eastern region, covering Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties.
Despite Garissa’s dry climate, Mr. Buraze noted that the county has significant agricultural potential, particularly through irrigation along the Tana River.
“MM Shurie has pledged to support farmers by promoting modern irrigation farming, providing improved seeds, and ensuring better market access,” he said.
“Previous administrations have failed to empower farmers with the necessary tools and techniques, but we believe Shurie will change this.”
He added that the candidate also aims to develop sustainable livestock farming, a key economic activity in the region.
To boost economic growth, Mr. Shurie plans to support small businesses and local entrepreneurs through funding and training.
“He is also planning to harness his networks and attracting investors to create more job opportunities for youth,” said Buraze.
Mr. Shurie has been recognized for his outstanding public service with several national honors.
In 2023, President William Ruto awarded him the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS).
He was also honored with the Head of State’s Commendation (HSC) – Civilian Division by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2021 and received the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) the same year.
“With his extensive experience and a track record of leadership, the youth of Garissa are confident that MM Shurie is the right leader to transform the county and improve the lives of its residents,” said Mr. Buraze.
