NAIROBI—Getting your passport will now take three days maximum, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Coordination Fred Matiang’i has said.

Speaking at Kisii Immigration and Civil Registration offices in his ussual surprise visit on Friday, Matiang’i said move was aimed at curtailing brokerage that thrives on long waiting period of the vital document.

“We have had people waiting for seven days for their passports, but applicants will now get their passports after three days. We want to reduce these delays even further to a day,” the Nation quoted the CS as saying.

Matiang’i noted that the department of Immigration “became a den of corruption and bribery” saying robust measures are being put in place to “clear the mess” and turn the centres into place where public has “high confidence in.”

“I want officials to get this clear: We will not condone bribery when the public apply for documents,” he said.

“We do not want long queues and brokers in these offices. We will streamline issuance of services and will not condone nonsense,” he warned.

Matiang’i vowed that he would continue with his impromptu visit to immigration centers countrywide in a bid to streamline service delivery.
