Global leaders, the international community rally support after Shabab attack on beachfront hotel in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU—World  leaders and international orgerinisations Friday line up to condemn the attack on a beachfront restaurant in the Somali capital Mogadishu, an attack that led to the death of at least 25 people, among them the attackers. The attack was later claimed by Al Shabab.

Led by the United Nations, they termed the attack cowardly, saying terrorism would not have the upperhand to continue to wreck havoc in the country and the horn of African region. The newly appointed UN representative to Somalia, Micheal Keating termed the incident a terrorist attack, adding that the United Nation would stand with the victims and the loved ones they left behind.

Keating thanked the Somali security forces for facilitating the escape of a number of civilians caught up in the siege that lasted for at least 10-hours.

“We must applaud the gallant action of the security forces that saved many lives. We must appreciate their swift arrival and how they carried out their counter offensive,” Keating said in a statement he sent to the newsrooms.

The South African foreign ministry has said in a statement that it stand with the people of Somalia. “We send our condolence message to the President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the people of Somalia,” the statement said.

The statement added that the South African government would help the Amisom and the Somali National Army in defeating the armed group Al Shabab which has carried out the attack. The statement stated that Al Shabab’s senseless killing of civilians would not be allowed to continue.
