Governor Ali Bunow on the spot for misusing Garissa county’s cash and initiating no development

GARISSA—Garissa county governor Ali Bunow Korane is on the spot for misusing the county’s cash and initiating no development during his first nine months in office.

According to the controller of budget, the county government of Garissa spent total of 2.28 billion (61.3%) on salaries while there was zero expenditure on development activities for the first 9 month of Financial year 2017/18.

The governor who was elected through Jubilee ticket paid more salaries as compared to the last nine months of his predecessor.

Korane sacked casual workers in March saying he lacked budget for them.

The first nine months of Financial Year 2016/17, the previous regime incurred 2,097 billion (50%) on personal emolument (Salaries) Compared to the same period (The first nine months of financial Year 2017/18) the current county government spent 2,284 billion (63.1%) on Salaries.

This an increase of 8.9% spent on salaries.

In Nathif’s Government, the First nine months of Financial Year 2016/17 incurred 804.56 million (19.2%) on maintenance and operation while the current government doubled the amount to 1,442.42 billion (38.7%) .

This means 19.5% more was spent on operation and maintenance.

According to the Garissa county treasury, for the last 9 month, the county recorded zero expenditure on development activities while the previous government registered 1,292.08 billion (30.8%) on development activities.

Garissa county government also used over 800 million on foreign trips.

Governor Ali Bunow was accused of having fake degree papers in February after University of Nairobi disowned his certificates.

“The copy of the certificate is not genuine and was not issued by this university,” said the university’s registrar of academics.

During his campaigns, the governor promised to end the perennial water shortages, ten months into office, most parts of the county lacks the precious commodity.
