Garissa County Governor Nathif Jama Adam has lauded the management and maternity team of Garissa County Referral Hospital for their commitment to safe motherhood.
The county made a historic achievement of zero maternal deaths over the past three months in July.
Speaking during a celebratory breakfast hosted in honor of the hospital’s maternity team, Governor Jama praised the staff for their dedication, professionalism, and life-saving efforts.
He described the milestone as “a powerful symbol of progress and hope” for the people of Garissa.
“This achievement is remarkable because of the numbers. Statistics of mothers returning home safely to their families, about futures secured, and communities strengthened,” said Governor Jama.
“I am incredibly proud of the leadership and frontline staff at Garissa County Referral Hospital for their tireless work and deep sense of responsibility to our people.”
Governor Jama called on the entire health sector to emulate the commitment shown by Garissa County Referral Hospital.
He encouraged continuous learning, innovation, and community engagement to maintain and scale the success across all sub-counties.
The Governor underscored the strategic investments by the county government that have enabled Garissa County Referral Hospital to reach this milestone.
These include ensuring a steady supply of essential medicines and medical equipment, upgrading and equipping sub-county hospitals to reduce referral burdens, and enhancing the recruitment and retention of qualified healthcare professionals.
“Healthcare is a priority in my administration, and we will continue investing in infrastructure, human resources, and service delivery to ensure such milestones become the norm and not the exception,” the Governor added.
Under the leadership of Mr. Mahat Sheikh Salah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the hospital has become a cornerstone in the transformation of maternal health services.
Mr. Mahat Salah said the facility now offers round-the-clock skilled delivery care, ensuring that women have access to professional support at all hours.

He said this drives the hospital’s commitment to delivering high-quality maternal health care.
These interventions, coupled with countywide healthcare reforms spearheaded by Governor Jama’s administration, have strengthened the health system of Garissa County.
