MANDERA—Mandera Governor Ali Roba has urged the national government to boost security in the North Eastern region.

Speaking in Mandera Town on Monday Roba said that security is once again deteriorating in the region and asked security agencies to deploy more police and army personnel especially in areas bordering Somalia.

“Our appeal is to the national government to deploy more security personnel and guarantee the security of Mandera and the larger Northern Kenya region,” he said.

This was the first meeting with the people of Mandera after his victory was upheld by the High court last week.

The Jubilee governor said that locals especially non-residents are living in fear of attacks from suspected militia groups.

Roba noted that frequent insecurity has seen the area lag behind in terms of development.

He gave a stern warning to residents against colluding with terror and criminal agents as he noted that reports of the recent attacks reveal that some residents could be aiding terror activities.

The governor called on local chiefs and clan elders to sensitize locals on the need for Nyumba Kumi and policing as it will go a long way in fighting terror.

Roba at the same time urged non-locals especially teachers to remain put, saying that their safety will be guaranteed.

He said that the region stands to suffer if professionals vacate the area out of security fears.

Garissa governor Ali Bunow Korane during a meeting with investors last month also expressed his dissatisfaction over the security of the county and stated terror attacks have been pushing potential investors away.

Korane also blamed terrorism for the stunted development and requested the state to beef up security in the county.
