NAIROBI—Fleet of ambulances were today flagged off by the new Wajir governor during ceremony in Nairobi just five after he was sworn-in to office.

Speaking during the event, Governor Ahmed Abdullahi alias Jiir said this goes along way in his promise to revamp the ailing healthcare sector in the county.

As we promised during the campaigns, providing quality health care services is one of the priorities of our administration,” he said in a statement.

He added that the ambulances will support the county referral system and attend to emergency medical cases.

“Our intention is to revive the Wajir County Referral Hospital and all the other health facilities to ensure they are equipped with drugs so as to offer better quality healthcare services to the citizenry in Wajir,” he added.

The ambulances, he continued, were procured through a grant from the World Bank under Kenya Devolution Support Program (KDSP).

“These are performance-based and conditional grants from the World Bank to support capacity building and technical assistance at the county level,” the statement further added.

According to people close to him who spoke to Kulan Post, the county chief is planning to “clean the Wajir Afya House” which caused the political downfall of his predecessor and his deputy, Ahmed Ali Werar.

Jiir and his deputy are taking charge at a time when some counties are experiencing ravaging and prolonged drought that has seen water sources dry up and pastures depleted.

Some of the affected counties include Tana River, Taita Taveta, Samburu, Isiolo, Laikipia, Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Kilifi, and Narok. Others include Kiambu, Murang’a, Embu, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera, Kisii, Migori, and Nairobi.

Ahmed Abdullahi reckons that the county, like many others in the region, has undergone a challenging period due to the prolonged  drought with most residents in dire need of food as the prices of basic commodities shot up and those of livestock dropping drastically.

“It demands our focused attention and energy to aid in its recovery and help get it back on track. I believe, that if we join hands, these challenges shall be behind us in the shortest time possible,” Abdullahi said in his inauguration speech on Thursday last week.
