Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has dared members of the county assembly (MCAs) threatening to impeach him to go ahead.

Jama said he was not ready to be sucked into political sideshows played by “juvenile” MCAs. “Don’t distract us with your empty political rhetoric instead of joining us in delivering our promises to those who elected us. Leaders shouldn’t play unhealthy politics,” the governor said during Friday’s Jamhuri Day celebrations.
Filing the motion to remove the governor, Bananey MCA Mohamed Siyad cited gross violation of the Constitution and procurement malpractices. “Our people want service delivery, not politics. I urge county leaders to put clan and political affiliations aside and join us in moving the county forward for the good of the local people,” Jama said.
But in a quick rejoinder, Siyad described the governor’s remarks as attempts to look for sympathy from residents who attended the celebrations.
“The governor sent a delegation of elders and local MPs to persuade me to drop the motion after they noticed it was being supported by three quarters of the assembly members. If he is not guilty, why is he panicking?” he asked.
Meanwhile, youth in Garissa have threatened to petition for dissolution of the county government if MCAs impeach the governor.
Garissa National Youth Council representative Hussein Salat said the assembly wants to frustrate the executive.
The youth leader said they will mobilise residents and collect signatures to make sure the county government is dissolved.
“We are the voters and we are bound to suffer if impeachment by the assembly goes through. We will collect signatures and dissolve the whole county if they don’t rescind their plot,” he said.
