GARISSA—National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale on Sunday said the names of individuals behind the importation of contraband sugar is at the Parliaments table and will be revealed to the public this week.

Addressing journalists at the inaugural Garissa High School Alumni Conference, Duale, who is serving his second term as Garissa Township MP, said he had tabled before Parliament’s Agriculture and Trade Committees a list of those involved in the importation of suspected poisonous sugar.

“A report of people who imported sugar that is not fit for human consumption is with the committee of Parliament and their names will be known on Tuesday,” he said.

“These sugar barons, whoever they are, regions they come from… will account for their business dealings before parliamentary committees,” he added.

Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Aden Mohamed last week contradicted his Interior counterpart Fred Matiang’i, saying tests on alleged poisonous sugar had turned out negative.

The Garissa Township MP further delved into the liefstyle audit issue, saying he fully supports Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive that public officers undergo a lifestyle.

Ten Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) officials are due in court Monday morning to face various charges related to the importation of contraband goods, including sugar and fertilizer.
