MOMBASA—Embattled Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho has been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission in Mombasa Thursday afternoon.

His clearance was largely welcomed by his supporters who lined up along the street to witness him coming out—clearance certificate in hand.

“It is time to move ahead and complete the journey together,” he said.

The academic certificate of Hassan Joho was questioned although he maintained that he was a university graduate.

Ali Joho is challenged for the seat by the serving Mombasa senator Omar of Wiper party and Suleiman Shahbal of Jubilee.

Suleiman Shahbal was endorsed by President Uhuru Kenyatta earlier in the year.

Local political analysts say Joho commands the popular vote in the opposition county.
