GARISSA – An impersonator at Garissa County Referral and Teaching Hospital (GCRTH) is under investigation after allegedly soliciting money from a patient under false pretenses and issuing a fake laboratory report, according to an official incident report seen by Kulan Post.

The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2025, at around 2:00 PM, was captured on CCTV cameras installed within the hospital.

The suspect reportedly approached a patient and demanded Ksh 1,500, claiming he would assist her in undergoing a Thyroid Function Test (TFT).

After obtaining the money, the individual, a former casual worker allegedly misrepresented himself as a relative of the patient and instructed a student on duty to collect a blood sample.

However, instead of submitting the sample to the main laboratory for proper analysis, the suspect fabricated a Full Hemogram report and gave it to the patient, misleading her about the nature and results of the test.

Hospital authorities say the act violated internal policies of the facility and also posed serious risks to patient safety.

“This conduct undermines the integrity of our health services and is a clear breach of both ethical standards and legal responsibilities,” said Ramalan Mohamed, the hospital’s ICT Officer.

The matter was promptly reported to the hospital security team, and investigations are currently ongoing.

The installation of CCTV cameras across key areas of the hospital has helped deter unethical behavior, monitor staff and visitor interactions, and provide a factual basis for internal investigations.

Mr. Ramalan said the technology has also helped protect frontline workers against false accusations and supports transparency in service delivery.

Garissa County Referral and Teaching Hospital (GCRTH) assured the public that disciplinary and legal actions will be taken in accordance with institutional regulations and Kenyan law.

Kulan Post has learned the suspect’s name, which we are not releasing at this time for legal reasons. We have confirmed that this individual is no longer affiliated with the hospital management.

The Hospital has urged patients to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to ensure the safety and trust of the medical community is upheld.

The exposure of misconduct by a former casual worker at Garissa County Referral and Teaching Hospital (GCRTH) underscores the critical role of CCTV surveillance in enhancing security and accountability within healthcare facilities.

Hospital ICT Officer Ramalan Mohamed stated that the surveillance system has become an invaluable tool in safeguarding patient welfare and maintaining professional standards.

“Without the CCTV footage, identifying and verifying this serious breach of trust would have been significantly more difficult. It allows us to respond quickly and with evidence,” he said.
