NAIROBI—Suspended Youth Affairs Principal Secretary Lilian Mbogo Omollo and National Youth Service Director-General Richard Ndubai and 22 other suspects implicated in the NYS scam will spend at least six days in jail as they await a ruling on their bail application.

Nairobi magistrate Dauglas Ogoti after hearing rival arguments from both the prosecution and the defence on the 22 suspects said that he needed at least three days to come up with a verdict.

The Anti-Corruption Court made the ruling past midnight after a harrowing 12-hour court session.

The judge dismissed the defence lawyers’ argument that the suspects posed no danger to witnesses in the scandal.

“As you can see the hearing ended up in the morning and I have a very busy day today. I will require at least three days making a reasoned ruling on bail. I will do this on June 5,” Ogoti said.

Other than Mrs Omollo and Mr Ndubai, other suspects who appeared in court were Sammy Michuki, Sophy Karimi, Rodgers Nzioka, Evan Wafula Kundu, Welenalo Mulupi, Ferdinand Matano Odonyo, Christopher Malala and Sammy Mbugua Mwangi, among others.

It also emerged that one of the accused persons, Evans Wafula Kundu , brought  himself to court after hearing on television that he had been implicated in the scam.

The prosecution however told the court that the CID had not taken his statements and fingerprints in preparation for him to appear in court.

Youth and Gender PS Lillian Omollo was admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital private wing after she reportedly fainted at the Langata Women Prison on Tuesday night.

Male suspects have been remanded at the Industrial Area prison.
