Nairobi has clarified it has not granted Somaliland an embassy in Nairobi.

In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry stated that it “respectfully reaffirms its unwavering recognition of the Federal Republic of Somalia as a sovereign State.”

“The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs wishes to reiterate that the Government of the republic of Kenya maintains and respectfully reaffirms its unwavering recognition of the Federal Republic of Somalia as a sovereign State,” the statement read in part.

The clarification comes hours after Somaliland leader, President Abdirahman Cirro unveiled what he termed as “Somaliland mission in Kenya.”

“Through this Mission, we will work to eliminate trade barriers, attract investments into Somaliland’s thriving sectors such as livestock, agriculture, and renewable energy, and strengthen cultural and educational exchanges,” Cirro said during the unveiling event in Nairobi on Thursday.

“The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of the Republic of Kenya avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Liaison Office of Somaliland in Nairobi the assurances of its highest consideration,” the statement further assured.
