NAIROBI—Kitui East Memeber of Parliament Nimrod Mbai has incited violence against Somali herders in his area.
In a social media posting on Saturday, the first-time legislator said he would “deal” with the herders if they would not heed his call to migrate from the area.
“Leave this place (Kitui East) or it won’t be good for you,” the youthful legislator was overheard saying.
He shared the same wordings on his Facebook page.
In his post he has show concern on how the conflict between the Kamba and Somali on their border in competition for pasture and water has disadvantaged the Kamba community.
Mbai said he came to an agreement which was followed by an altimatum that all Somali herders living within Kitui county should leave within less than 10 days failure to which we will have “Business not as usual”.
“Kama mbaya! ni mbaya! nani Mbaya.” his post read.
Benjamin Nzioka, the Deputy County commissioner, told the Somali herders to leave peacefully and let the area residents go back to their normal lives.Similar threats were made by the former legislator for Kitui East Mutua Muluvi who was later accused of leading gang of armed men who massacred over twenty camels in a village bordering Tana River.
The act caused massive outrage across the country when the pictures of the carcasses who died of gunshot injuries surfaced on the internet.
The MP who vied on Jubilee ticket and lost the seat to the incumbent, was not indicted.
In November, the herders were part of the beneficiaries of a blanket State compensation pay-out programme where the government expanded the livestock insurance to Garissa and Samburu counties.
A contract that covered 8,000 households and 90,060 livestock were signed and the payment made.
The herders accused the police of being behind the shooting of the camels but the police did not react to the allegations.
