WAJIR—We will have to stop killing each other every other day if we really want the blessing of Allah, a religious leader in Wajir told a congregation of worshipers on Sunday morning.

The worshipers converged for a special prayer aimed at praying for rains as the region experiences biting drought and water shortage.

Speaking at Orahey grounds in Wajir, sheikh Mohamud said God would not ease the suffering of the people if they will not stop killing each other over trivial issues that could be easily solved without resorting to violence.

He called on the government to engage the religious leaders in solving the perennial clan clashes.

“The peace talks should be conducted immediately and let the government engage the sheikhs because they can pass the message of peace effectively,” Sheikh Mohamud said.

Wajir governor Ahmed Abdullahi said the ongoing drought spell has forced the county to increase emergency funding to mitigate the effect.

“”We are using sh1 million  daily to mitigate the situation,” the governor said.

Meanwhile, at least six people have been killed at Baqala location at the border between Wajir West and Eldas constituency Saturday morning, Wajir County AP commandant Mohamed Sheikh has confirmed.

Wajir West MP, Abdikadir Ahmed Ore said the situation has calmed, adding that he would mobilise elders and religious leaders to calm the tension.

“I will fly to Wajir tomorrow to go Baqala along a team made up of Tarbaj MP Mohamed Elmi, nominated senator Halima, the security apparatus, elders from the area and religious leaders,” he told Kulan Post on the phone.
