WAJIR—Maasai Mara University has indicated that it would open campus in Wajir town following partnership with the county government.

If the deal sails through, Maasai Mara University will become the first public university to open branch in Wajir County.

Addressing the media after he signed MoU with the county leaders, registrar Fredrick Otieno termed the move milestone, saying the deal would go a long way in addressing the marginalization of the region.

“The classes will begin immediately we attain enough students to sign up for the classes. We need at least 16 students for the postgraduate and 26 for the undergraduate programmes,” Fredrick Otieno said.

The school-based programmes will be offered during holidays. According to the MoU, the Wajir branch will offer courses on health, livestock, education and business.

Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi welcomed the partnership, saying it would cut the cost of travelling to Nairobi and other towns for higher education.

“My administration will create a conducive environment for investors,” Ahmed said.

Apart from the newly re-opened Garissa University College, there are no other universities in North Eastern counties of Garissa, Wajir and Mandera save for few mid-level colleges that do not offer courses such as health which the area leaders identified as essential.

In addressing the shortfall of nurses and clinical officers, Wajir County government handed over 200 million worth fully equipped medical training college to the Health ministry in a bid to get more health workers.
