Section of the road under construction in Mandera town

MANDERA—Mandera County Assembly Roads Committee Sunday embarked on a road-inspection exercise as the deadline for the completion of most road construction works first approaches.

The 24-kilometer tarmac road is set to cost the county government sh 2.4 billion with December 2015 as its deadline.
Led by the committee chairman, Adan Abdi Nurrow and accompanied by the county minister for Roads, Ahmed Madey the group visited different sites to inspect the road project.
They also visited the laboratory to evaluate the construction materials and soil samples from the sites.

“We will have a consultative meeting with officials from the Department of Roads, the Consultants, Resident Engineers and engineers hired by the construction firms to ascertain whether we are getting value for our money”, Adhan said.

The committee was informed that a lot of time would be spent on designing the roads and earthworks.

Drainage of the tarmac and culverts will commence in weeks’ time while street light are set to be erected along the roads in a bid to turn the town into a 24-hour business economy.

The project is first of its kind since Mandera has never had a tarmacked road before.
