Mandera police arrest man for asking direction to Somalia

MANDERA—Mandera anti terror police unit have arrested man found asking directions to Somalia on suspicion that he was heading to the neighboring nation to join the militant group Al Shabab.

Mr Backstone Agaro, 53, will remain in police custody for seven days as investigations on whether he is linked to terror cells are conducted.

Mandera Resident Magistrate Dancun Mtai allowed the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) to investigate the suspect as they requested in a sworn affidavit.

Mr Elijah Nakeel, an officer attached to ATPU, in a sworn affidavit said they suspect Mr Agaro to be a Shabaab spy.

“The suspect came into Mandera from Garissa aboard a Tawakal company bus and immediately after alighting he inquired for directions to Somalia,” reads the affidavit.

In his defense,Agaro pleaded innocent, claiming that he was called by friends to do capentry work in Mandera.

“The suspect was in possession of notebooks that contains over 100 towns he visited before Garissa town,”the prosecution said.

Agaro will be held at Mandera police station awaiting police to complete investigations.
