MOMBASA—Mombasa Member of County Assembly (MCA), Kibwana Swaleh Baya is set to table a motion in the assembly seeking to ban the consumption of Muguka in the region.

Speaking to press in Mombasa, Kibwana said that the substance is destroying the lives of young people and wrecking education with high school dropouts.

The Miritini MCA who also chairs the health committee lamented that the substance has created a hopeless society of young people mostly school going children, adding that the trend has contributed to high school dropouts and poor performance in the national exams by local schools.

“These days small children chew Muguka instead of going to school. Muguka is cheap hence they can obtain get them,” Kibwana said.

He expressed his confidence that the Bill will sail through and passed as law by a majority of Members of the county assembly.

This will be the second attempt to ban the consumption of the leafy stimulants in the county.

In January, nominated member of county assembly Fatuma Swaleh tabled a motion in the assembly seeking the ban on the sale and consumption of Miraa and Muguka in Mombasa.

“It is time we have miraa and muguka banned. It is destroying marriages in Mombasa. Our children are also affected by the availability of the two,” she said.

The motion did not whoever sail through in the County Assembly.

Among the effects of the consumption of the leafy substances are hypertension, insomnia and gastric disorders. Miraa abuse can also lead into impotence and suicidal depression.
