Mp Geoffrey Ruku Bids Emotional Farewell to National Assembly After Cabinet Appointment

NAIROBI– Mbeere North MP, Geoffrey Ruku, delivered a heartfelt farewell address to the National Assembly on Wednesday, marking the end of his tenure as a legislator following his appointment as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programs. 

The nomination, vetting, and subsequent approval by the August House paved the way for his transition to the executive arm of government.

In an emotional speech in the National Assembly Chamber, Mr. Ruku expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve his constituents over the past two years and seven months. 

“It has been the honor of my life to serve my constituents in this Parliament,” he said, acknowledging the support of the Speaker, his colleagues, and the Clerk of the National Assembly.

During his time in the 13th Parliament, Mr. Ruku distinguished himself as an active and impactful legislator. 

He was a member of the Departmental Committee on Tourism and Wildlife and the Select Committee on Delegated Legislation.

Despite being a first-time MP, he sponsored several bills and motions, leaving a notable legislative footprint.

Among his significant contributions was the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes (Amendment) Bill of 2023, which seeks to replace harsh criminal penalties for minor procurement infractions with administrative and professional conduct measures aligned with employment laws. 

The bill is currently progressing through the legislative process.

Mr. Ruku also championed motions to address critical national issues. He advocated for a government-to-government model for the procurement and distribution of subsidized fertilizer to support farmers. 

He sponsored a motion to facilitate the local assembly of essential equipment for electricity connections through similar agreements, aiming to enhance access wòto power across the country.

Reflecting on his time in Parliament, Hon. Ruku noted the invaluable insights he gained through legislative discourse.

“As I transition from this House, I am privileged to have been part of the motions and legislative processes that fulfill our constitutional mandate,” he said.

The outgoing legislator pledged to carry the same dedication and integrity into his new role. 

“As the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programs, I promise to be diligent and true to my duty to the country,” he said.
