Names and birthplace of Mandera victims circulated

MANDERA—The names and the birthplaces of the 14 people killed in Mandera Tuesday night has been circulated with most of the victims coming from Central Kenya and one from Mandera County.

Among the victims, however is a woman of Somali origin: Naima Mohamed.

“She was shot dead after she pleaded with the gunmen to spare the men,” a survivors, who is nursing gunshot wounds, told reporters in the referral hospital.

It emerged that four of the victims are from Chaka while five other hail from Nyeri County. Muru has lost one person in the attack while the location of four others remained unknown.

Mandera County Commissioner Alex Nkoyo confirmed the attack, saying security officers were in pursuit of the attackers.

“The attackers hurled petrol bombs at the tents they were sleeping in (quarry workers) before they started shooting them as they fled,” he said on phone.

Mandera County Police Commander, Job Borongo said an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was at the scene of the attack and bomb experts are on their way to detonate it.

Resident around the neighbouhood say the rampage, which began shortly after midnight, continued for at least half an hour. The attack occurred at a village near Soko Mbuzi livestock market in the town.

Meanwhile, four of the 11 quarry workers who sustained multiple injuries have been airlifted to Nairobi by the Kenyan Red Cross.
