THE FRIDAY BULLETIN—The education ministry must move quickly to save the education sector in North Eastern region from collapsing. These sentiments were expressed by the Dadaab MP Muhammad Dahiye who said the sector was on its death knell and lamented that the ministry was not doing enough to address the current problem of a biting teacher shortage in the region.

Addressing guests at RAF international University over the weekend, the legislator said despite the engagements with the ministry and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), little action has been taken to address the matter.

“We have met with the cabinet secretary and the TSC over this matter but we are yet to see any progress and our children continue to suffer,” he said.

The move by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) to order non-local teachers to move out of the region on alleged security fears further worsened the situation as it opened the floodgates for the teachers to quit the region.

“The few teachers who had remained are also moving out after KNUT called for the transfer of the teachers to other areas,” he said.

The exodus of the teachers was occasioned by the attacks targeting non-locals teachers by the Al Shabaab militia in Mandera.

Even after assurances that the security had been beefed up by the national and county governments, the teachers who originate from other parts of the country and form the majority among the teaching staff have continued to stay away from the region after getting strong backing from the union.

In his remarks, the MP urged stakeholders and policy makers in the Muslim community to devise strategies for attitude change and ensure that students embrace the teaching profession. In his remarks, the RAF University Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Osman said one of the goals of the institution was to produce teachers and professionals who will contribute to enhance on the welfare of Muslims in the country.
He said the institution was operating through the government regulatory framework and expressed optimism that it will be awarded the Letter of Interim Authority which will give it official government recognition.
